Thermal hot springs that arise from geothermally heated groundwater are renowned for their relaxing and healing properties. Especially prized are hot springs originating from volcanic areas, where water is heated by the underlying magma. Ecuador is home to several such volcanic hot springs, surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Let’s explore some top benefits of soaking in these remarkable volcanic springs.
One of the primary benefits is simple relaxation. The warm mineral-rich waters provide profound full-body relaxation, easing away stress and tension. As you soak, feel your muscles relax and your mind quiet. The calming sensation of being immersed in the warm pool, often at temperatures of 35–45 °C, is deeply soothing. This makes volcanic hot springs perfect for unwinding after adventure activities like hiking near Punanti Hostel.
In addition to relaxation, the mineral-rich volcanic waters deliver therapeutic benefits by absorbing through your skin. Hot springs originating from volcanic areas contain high amounts of rejuvenating minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium, silica, and sulfates. As you soak, your skin absorbs these minerals, while the heat stimulates increased blood flow. The warm waters may also stimulate the release of endorphins, providing natural pain relief.
Research shows the mineral waters of volcanic hot springs can help remedy certain skin conditions. Water high in silica helps repair connective tissues and may reduce inflammation. Sulfur compounds treat conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis. After bathing, your skin will look refreshed, feel silky smooth, and maybe show an improved appearance from skin disorders.
The relaxation and stimulation of blood flow imparted by soaking in warm mineral waters also promote better sleep. If you have trouble falling asleep or wake frequently, try a long soak in the evening. The drop in body temperature after leaving the hot spring, extra circulation, and release of serotonin often result in a deep, restful sleep. You’ll awake feeling rested and restored.
In many cultures, hot springs bathing is valued not just physically but spiritually, as a way to calm the mind and reflect inward. The serene setting of many volcanic spring pools surrounded by nature enhances this meditative effect. Treat the experience as a chance to slow down, quiet inner chatter, and reconnect with yourself.
With benefits from relaxation to treating skin conditions to better sleep, it’s easy to see why volcanic hot springs have been treasured for centuries. Las Golondrinas Hot Springs offer the chance to experience these revitalizing waters firsthand. Whether soaking in a pool or bathing in private baths, the pleasures, and healing effects of water emerging from volcanic earth are truly remarkable.
