For altitude junkies, Ecuador’s high Andean peaks provide the ultimate climbing challenge. Massive stratovolcanoes like Cotopaxi, Chimborazo, and Cayambe offer demanding technical ice climbs up their glaciers and summits reaching over 6000 meters. Even when not going for the top, their sheer rock walls and surrounding formations offer hundreds of multi-pitch traditional and sports routes on excellent volcanic rock.
Beyond the diversity of rock types like volcanic tuff, sandstone, limestone and granite, Ecuador’s geology also delivers continually developing routes. The active landscape means new rock is often exposed, creating new unclimbed lines. This brings climbers back again and again.
The equatorial sun and high altitude combine to offer ideal weather for climbing here. You can climb year-round, avoiding harsh winter conditions. Days start sunny and rock dries fast. Evenings cool off for great sleeping conditions.
With outstanding rock in the high Andes, steamy jungles, and along the coast, Ecuador truly offers world-class climbing.
